Abstract: A simple activation analysis method for determination of nickel and copper in very
pure iron and gallium was devised. The irradiated matrix was trapped at ion exchangers
or it was separated by extraction with ether. Nickel and copper were first separated on
Dovex 1 by elution by 8 N and 3.5 N hydrochloric acid. Nickel was then purified from
the other elements, especially from the manganese, by precipitation with dimethylglyoxime,
by extraction of the nickel(II) dimethylglyoxime into chloroform and by repeated
precipitation with dimethylglyoxime. Copper was determined substoichiometrically by
extraction by sodium diethyldithiocarbamide in alkali medium in the presence of EDTA
and of citric acid. The preparations prepared by this procedure are radiochemically pure.
Under the given conditions of experiment, the determination sensitivity was 5.10-2 μg
nickel and 5 10-3
μg copper.
