Abstract: The x-ray structural analysis of the complex of stoichiometric compn. Cu3(CN)4.3NH3 with the ratio [Cu]:[CN]:[NH3] of 3.000:3.975:3.006 is described. The crystals are orthorhombic, space group Abm2, with a 12.674 ± 0.005, b 12.242 ± 0.005, c 14.577 ± 0.006 A.; Z = 8. The final R factor is 17.9%. Cu(I) is coordinated in a deformed tetrahedron, with CN groups occupying 3 peaks of the tetrahedron and with 1 more Cu(I) occupying the fourth peak. Cu(II) has a coordination no. of 6. It is coordinated in a deformed tetragonal bipyramid, the peaks of which are occupied by 4 NH3 mols. and 2 CN groups in the cis position. Cu(I) and Cu(II) are interbound with the CN groups, which behave as bifunction ligands. The structure is composed of layers which are mutually turned 180° and are deposited on each other in the direction of the c axis.
