Abstract:  α-TiCl3 reacts with pyridine soln. in n-hexane or C6H6 to form [TiCl3(py)3]. Diffuse reflectance spectra and chem. properties of the formed compds. indicate that the reaction occurs with the formation of nonstoichiometric compds. assocd. with gradually increasing amts. of chem. bound pyridine which decomp. to [TiCl3(py)3]. The band with a max. at 18,300 cm-1 indicates the no. of chloride bridges coordinated to Ti(III) and the band with a max. at 23,800 cm-1 the no. of pyridino mols. coordinated to Ti(III). The reflectance spectra of the system α-TiCl3-pyridine and crystal models of α-TiCl3, TiCl3.py, TiCl3.2py and [TiCl3(py)3] are given.
