Abstract: The sorption of acrylonitrile vapors by poly(vinyl chloride) and polypropylene contg. preadsorbed (BzO)2 was described. The expts. were carried out at 60° with a sorption scale contg. a silica spiral. The kinetic curves showed that the total amt. of sorbed vapor at the beginning of the reaction is more dependent on the phys. interaction of the sorbate and the sorbant than on the granulation of the polymer. Also, in the beginning, there is more sorption taking place than polymerization, until a definite max. concn. of the sorbed vapor by the polymer is reached. The amt. of vapor sorbed during the polymerization is dependent only on the type of polymer used. In the case of poly(vinyl chloride), after reaching a definite sorption max., there is a gradual decrease with an increase of the polymer which is greater than the decrease of the sorbate. With polypropylene, there is no decrease of sorption, but it increases as the amt. of polyacrylonitrile increases. This can be explained by the phys. structure of the polypropylene in its d. arrangement of the chains in the atactic part. The relative pressure of the vapor must be >0.4 during the polymerization.
