Gas chromatographic analysis of the chlorination products of 1,3-dichloro-2-butene

Abstract: During the chlorination of the mixt. of cis- and trans-1,3-dichloro-2-butene at -50° to +50° the main product is 2,3,4-trichloro-1-butene and the byproducts are 1,2,3,3-tetrachlorobutane and 1,2,3,3,4-pentachlorobutane. For the sepn., gas chromatog. on strongly polar stationary phases, tetrakis (β-cyanoethoxymethyl)methane (I) and tris(β-cyanoethoxy)propane (II) was applied. For the sp. eluting vols. at 121.5-40° for I and at 102.5-120° for II, the Antoine equation was used: log Vg0 = B + A/T, where Vg0 is the retention vol. in ml./g. adsorbed phase, T the abs. temp., and A and B are const. Programmed temp. is recommended because the components vary greatly in b.p.
