Abstract: A study of the structure of the polysaccharide (I), prepd. from the resin of the peach tree P. persica near Bratislava, was described. Paper and gas chromatographic methods were applied for the analysis. By the pptn. of raw resin in aq. 64% soln. with EtOH, an acid was prepd. with the equiv. wt. = 2300, [α]D = 53.4° (c 0.67, M NaOH), which consisted of D-glucuronic and 4-O-methyl-D-glucuronic acids, D-galactose, D-mannose, L-arabinose, and D-xylose in the molar ratio 2.5:2.5:25:2:32:15 and traces of L-rhamnose. The partial hydrolysis of I also yielded oligosaccharides β-D-GpA-1 → [6-β-D-Galp-1]n → 6-D-Gal (n = 0.1) and 4-0-Me-β-D-GpA-1 → 6-D-Gal and 4-O-methyl-D-glucuronic acid. By the autohydrolysls of aq. 35% raw resin soln., a degraded I was prepd. with equiv. wt. 1340, [α]D 5.5° (c 1.2, H2O), which was composed of D-glucuronic and 4-O-methyl-D-glucuronic acids, D-galactose, D-mannose, L-arabinose and D-xylose in the molar ratio 2.5:2.5:25:2:5:5 and traces of L-rhamnose. I and degraded I were oxidized with periodate. The degraded I was also methylated. From the results obtained by the paper and gas chromatographic methods, it was detd. that the main chain is formed by the structural e units: → 6-β-D-Galp-1 → 6-β-D-Glap-1 →. The non-reductive end groups are formed the D-glucuronic and 4-O-methyl-D-glucuronic acids, L-arabinose and D-xylose.
