Determination of the hydrogen in hydrocarbons by neutron irradiation

Abstract: A method for the detn. of H in hydrocarbons (C6H6, PhMe, m-xylene, cyclohexane, n-hexane, 1,2,3,4-tetrahydronaphthalene, and methylcyclohexane) by neutron irradiation (5.26 × 105 neutrons/sec.) was described. Ra-Be (50 mg. Ra) was used as a neutron source. The intensity of the secondary radiation (protons) was measured with a Geiger-Mueller counter tube. The H content was calcd. on the basis of a linear relation. The measurements of the intensity are not dependent on the sp. gr. In the presence of other, esp. heavier elements,than H and C, this method cannot be used.
