Abstract: The chelating properties of 1,3-diaminopropan-2-ol-N,N,N',N'-tetraacetic acid (I) were studied by a paper electrophoretic method and compared with those of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (II). The curves of the electrophoretic mobility of the complexes indicated that in most cases, both I and II formed mononuclear chelates in a 1:1 ratio of metal: agent. The alc. group of I did not participate in the chelation. Pb(II)-chelate is different; it is binuclear and of the compn. Pb2A-. It is stable in the soln. at pH >4.0, but at its formation the cleavage a proton from the hydroxyl group indicated I to be a 7-donor agent. Mononuclear Fe(III)-chelate, FeA-, exists over a very narrow range of conditions; possibly, at pH >4.0 there was a cleavage of a proton from the hydroxyl group with coordination of its O. The stability of the chelates of I with the exception of Cu(II) chelate, was considerably lower than that of II chelates. The Mg chelate has exceptionally low stability.
