Abstract: The formation of the chlorate complexes of Cu(II) and Co(II) in acetone was studied spectrophotometrically. The isomolar solns. measured were CuCl2-NaClO3-acetone and Cu(NO3)2.3H2O-NaClO3-acetone and the solns. of the monovariant systems CuCl2-NaClO3-acetone, Cu(ClO4)2.4H2O-NaClO3-acetone, Cu(NO3)2.3H3O-NaClO3-acetone, and CoCl2-NaClO3-acetone. The addn. of NaClO3 in the acetone soln. and the formation of chloride-chlorate complexes does not change the absorption curve in the visible spectrum at 0.475 μ max., but the absorption intensity is increased. Multinuclear complexes of Cu(II) in which the chlorate acts as a bridge are probably formed. The absorption spectra were also not changed in the system Cu(NO3)2.3H2O-NaClO3-acetone. In the system CoCl2-NaClO3-acetone with the formation of chloride-chlorate Co(II) complexes, a new absorption band at max. 0.592 μ and a shift of chloride-Co(II) complex band in acetone to longer wavelength (0.662 μ) was found. Complexes with the heterogeneous coordination sphere contg. Cl- and ClO3- as ligands were probably formed.
