The stability of chlorous acid in solutions of mineral acids

Abstract: The prepn. of ClO₂ by the decompn. of NaClO₂ with HCl or H₂SO₄, as applied in water purification technology, does not occur according to stoichiometric equations given in literature. By using an excess of HCl the NaClO₂ decompn. is almost complete, and simultaneously there is a formation of NaClO₃, which is not effective in water purification and impairs the economy of the process.
