Role of water in the substitution of bis(2-chloroethyl) sulfide

Abstract: In a kinetic study of the hydrolysis of bis(2-chloroethyl) sulfide (I) it was detd. that ionization of I was effected by interaction of it with a mol. of H2O. The effect of the ionic force on the reaction speed in the acid and neutral medium can be explained by the fact that the conversion of 2-hydroxyethyl 2-chloroethyl sulfide into I at pH 7.0 was purely a monomol. process, while in the presence of acids it was effected by the effect of H ions on chlorohydrin.
