Periodate oxidation of saccharides. I. Iodometric determination of small quantities of formic acid with the use of amperometric indicators

Abstract: An anal. method was described for the detn. of small amts. (0.5-2.0 mg.) of HCOOH, which was a product of NaIO₄ oxidn. of saccharides, by use of amperometric indicators and one pair of polarized Pt electrodes. The method was tested by the detn. of HCOOH, formed by the oxidn. with NaIO4 of methyl α-D-glucoside, saccharose, and the amylose fraction, isolated from corn and is exact, rapid, and suitable for structural detns. of polysaccharides.
