Analysis of products of oxo synthesis

Abstract: The main products of oxo synthesis: iso-PrCHO, PrCHO, iso-BuOH, BuOH, 2-ethyl-4-methylpentenal, 2-ethylhexenal, 2-ethyl-4-methylpentanol, and 2-ethylhexanol were estd. in a mixt. on an improved gas-chromatographic app. having a short precolumn. Higher-boiling compds. were trapped in this precolumn and then washed out by reversing the flow of carrier gas, while distribution of lower-boiling compds. was carried out simultaneously in the main column. With 7% polyethylene glycol 4000 on crushed earthenware, no evidence of sorption or interaction with the stationary phase was observed, and fairly reproducible results were obtained.
