Abstract: The inoculation of isotactic, oxidized polypropylene (I) with styrene (II) by using an emulsion redox system triethylenetetramine (III)-FeSO4.7H2O (IV) at 15-45° was described. The compn. of the polymn. system was: 0.4 g. I, 3 mL. II, 1 mL. III, 1 mL. IV, 0.5 mL. glucose, 3 mL. Merzol H (emulsifier), 1.5 mL. Na3PO4.12H2O, and 8 mL. H2O. The optimum pH is 7.0 at a III concn. of 4.56 × 10-3 mole/1. and a IV concn. of 2.28 × 10-3 mole/l.; the effective activation energy is approx. 8 kcal./mol. The most effective factors is the presence of combined III and IV and the pH. IV is more effective than III. In the absence of III and IV, there is no inoculation and large amts. of homopolymers, as much as 450 and 520% (based on the wt. of I), are formed.
