Hydrogen bridges and infrared absorption spectra of alkoxy esters of salicylic acid

Abstract: Infrared absorption spectra of 12 esters of salicylic acid with monoalkyl ethers of polyethylene glycols show strong bands at 1135 (asym. vibration of C-O-C bond), 1685 (asym. vibration of carbonyl), and 2300 cm-1 (intramol.H bridge). The hypsochromic shift of the carbonyl peak due to the strong H bridge is not significantly influenced by the length of the alkoxy chain; the effect of various solvents (11 tested) was slight and much smaller than that observed on p-HOC6H4-CO2Et. The spectra of the compds. o-HOC6H4CO2[(CH2)2O]nR, are presented (n, R, b.p./pressure): 1, Et, 138-40°/1.5; 1, Pr, 145-7°/1.5; 1, iso-Pr, 134-6°/1.5; 1, Bu, 149-50°/1.5; 2, Me, 142-4°/1; 2, Et, 162-4°/1; 2, Pr, 167-9°/1; 2, iso-Pr, 158-9°/1; 2, Bu, 174-6°/1; 3, Me, 182-4°/1; 3, Et, 188-90°/1; and 3, Bu, 202-4°/1
