The structure of the dithiocyanatodiamminecuprate(II) complex

Abstract: The title compd. was prepd. (Litterscheid, Arch. Pharm. 239, 336(1901)); the parameters of all atoms were obtained by means of Fourier and difference Fourier synthesis on the Patterson's projections P(u0w) and P(uv0), and from symmetry conditions of the space groups. The compd. crystallizes in the orthorhombic system (a 13.93, b 6.01, c 8.86 A.) with space group Pnma (or possibly Pn21a); d. (calcd.) is 1.912, and d. (exptl.) 1.911. Preliminary conclusions indicate that the structure is composed of infinite linear forms. The Cu atom appears, with a coordination no. of 4 + 2, in the center of a rectangle with the NH3 groups and the N atoms of the SCN groups at the 4 corners in the trans position. The S atoms of half the no. of the SCN groups are doubly satd., and occupy the corners of a bipyramidal structure, thus completing the mildly deformed tertiary configuration of Cu.
