Abstract: Various factors affecting the pyrohydrolytic detn. of F- in Al production and with TiO2 as an activator are described. The condensate is titrated with 0.2N NaOH, with phenolphthalein or cresol red indicators. It is not necessary to under-layer or over-layer the sample with the activator. The sample wt. should be ≥0.1 g., and the wt. ratio of activator to sample should be ≤5:1. The flow of the H2O vapor should be ≥5 g. H2O/min. (about 200 cm./sec.). Under these conditions, the max. error is ±0.1% relative or 0.2% abs.
