The preparation of ethylene glycol monoester of methacrylic acid

Abstract: An improved method for the prodn. of glycol methacrylate was described. Methacrylic acid (I) was treated with 30-50% excess of ethylene oxide in the presence of C₅H₅N. Unreacted I was titrated with an aq. soln. of piperidine (phenol red). The distn. of an inert solvent is eliminated with a doubled yield of 75 to 85%.
