Oscillographic determination of sulfonyl chlorides

Abstract: In a.c. oscillog. polarog. with a Hg dropping electrode, p-toluenesulfonyl chloride (I) in M HOAc + M NaOAc dild. with MeOH (4:1) gave a readily measurable cathodic peak on the curve dE÷dt = f(E). The hydrolysis of I in 0.66M NaOH (33% MeOH) was completed at 25° after 15 min., at 35° after 10 min., and at 45° after 4 min. In acidic solns., the hydrolysis was negligible.
