The method of determining the coefficient of adhesion of particles in a suspension

Abstract: The possibility of using the Kurgaev method (CA 51, 10183b) to det. the adhesion coeff. was tested exptl. The measurements were made on suspensions of beet sugar juices and on some model systems of disperse coagulation or condensation type. The compressibility of the dispersed portion during sedimentation was evaluated. In systems showing a pronounced aggregation of particles there may be no formation of the homogeneous area structure of the sediment but the individual particles partially conserve their shape. The theoretical bases of the Kurgaev method were analyzed in detail. Kurgaev, in choosing the integration time interval τ2 - τ1 = const., forgot to reduce the middle speed of the condensation on the unit height, H0, of the suspension. It is evident from the exptl. detd. function V0/H0 = f(p), where V is pptn. rate, p is pressure, and subscript zeros signify initial conditions, that it was impossible to det. the coeff. of adhesion, even in the case when it was calcd. with the reduced middle speed of the condensation V0/H0, which was theoretically proved. It is impossible by this method to det. the objective characteristic of the adhesion forces between the suspension particles.
