Abstract: cf. CA 55, 27322a. The synthesis of new 9-isothiocyanatoacridine (I) and 4-nitro (II), 3-nitro (III) derivs. by the rhodanide method was described. 9-Chloroacridine or 3-nitro-9-chloroacridine was heated in water-free toluene with AgSCN 6 hrs., 4-nitro 9-chloroacridine heated for 1 hr. in an inert gas (H) to give, resp. I, m. 131-2°, yield 51%, II, m. 160-1°, yield 64%, and III, m. 213-14°, yield 58%. I formed yellow needles, sensitive to light and atm. O; on longer standing it became dark with a change in color to orange and red. II formed yellow-brown needles, sensitive to hydrolysis and decompg. in humid air. III formed yellow shingles, more stable than the other two compds.
