Effect of amino acids on the amount of free chlorine in chlorine water

Abstract: The change in the amt. of free active Cl in Cl water after an addn. of amino acids under various equiv. ratios of HOCl to amino acids was studied. Free active Cl was detd. by titration with methyl orange, and at the same time the total active Cl was detd. iodometrically. At the equiv. ratio of HOCl to amino acids of 1:25 no free active Cl was found. At the reverse ratio of 25:1 the detn. of free active Cl was not exact. Free active Cl at the equiv. ratios of HOCl to the no. of substituted H atoms on N found in the corresponding amino acids of 2:1 and 3:1 in most of the amino acids tested in soln. was not found. The results indicate that at the decompn. of amino acids by the action of free active Cl chloroamines are formed, and free active Cl is almost completely lost.
