Antibiotic S-82 with a wide range of effectiveness

Abstract: The isolation of an antibiotic S-82 similar to penicillin is described. S-82 is neutral, sol. in MeOH, acetone, EtOAc, BuOH, Et₂O, and CHCl₃, slightly sol. in H₂O, insol. in C₆H₆ and petr. ether. It is very effective against Bacillus subtilis, Streptococcus hemolyticus ( S. pyogenes) group A, Diplococcus pneumoniae, Candida albicans Pn 10, and Tetrahymena geleii (T. pyriformis), less effective against Staphylococcus albus, S. aureus, Escherichia coli, and Salmonella typhimurium. A photomicrograph of S-82 crystals is shown.
