The preparation of sodium tetrasulfide

Abstract: For the prepn. of Thiokol A a pure Na₂S₄ is necessary. On the basis of known methods, a new modified method for the prepn. of Na₂S₄ is described. Na₂S.9H₂O is heated for a short time at 60-70° with an exactly calcd. amt. of powd. S in a const. stream of dry H until a change to a yellow-clear soln. which changes under lowered pressure to a dark sirup-like soln. Still in a H atm., at -5 to -10°, Na₂S₄.6H₂O is crystd. The purity was detd. potentiometrically and colorimetrically.
