Abstract: cf. C.A. 53, 9657a. In sulfite cooking the effect of HCOOH on SO2 solns. at higher temp. under pressure was studied. HCO2H reduces SO2 with the formation of thiosulfates and elementary S and is oxidized to CO2. The decompn. of SO2 by HCO2H is more rapid in solns. buffered with NaOH. The detrimental effect of HCO2H is explained if present in the cooking acid before cooking. Under certain conditions HCO2H as a reducing agent accelerates sulfite cooking.
