Abstract: cf. C.A. 52, 9014h. It was detd. that the failure of some hydrogenation condensations of PhCH(OH)Ac (I) with MeNH₂ in the production of l-ephedrine is caused by the higher concn. of Fe present in tech. I. The optimum concn. for this reaction of Fe(OH)₃ is 0.0025, for Ni(OH)₂ 0.005, and for Co(OH)₂ 0.015%. Concns. of Fe(OH)₃ and Ni(OH)₂ higher than 0.01% and of Co(OH)₂ higher than 0.05% stop the reaction.
