Abstract: cf. C.A. 52, 1049a. Vinyl chloride (I), synthesized above 150° on a catalyst prepd. by the impregnation of active C with HgCl2, contains from the products boiling above 20°, MeCHCl2 (II), trans-(ClCH:)2 (III), AcH (IV) and in smaller amts. cis-(ClCH:)2 (V), ClCH2CHCl2 (VI), and CH2:CCl2 (VII). In the reaction system for the formation of IV and VII, H2O is necessary. The formation of III, V, and VII is dependent on the amt. of free Cl in HCl entering the reaction. In the reaction of HCl with I, the formation of II, III and VI, and part of I and IV is catalyzed by the active C, while the other part of I and IV, VII and V is catalyzed by HgCl2.
