Catalysts for vinyl chloride. III. The conditions for development of side reaction products

Abstract: cf. C.A. 52, 1049a. Vinyl chloride (I), synthesized above 150° on a catalyst prepd. by the impregnation of active C with HgCl₂, contains from the products boiling above 20°, MeCHCl₂ (II), trans-(ClCH:)₂ (III), AcH (IV) and in smaller amts. cis-(ClCH:)₂ (V), ClCH₂CHCl₂ (VI), and CH₂:CCl₂ (VII). In the reaction system for the formation of IV and VII, H₂O is necessary. The formation of III, V, and VII is dependent on the amt. of free Cl in HCl entering the reaction. In the reaction of HCl with I, the formation of II, III and VI, and part of I and IV is catalyzed by the active C, while the other part of I and IV, VII and V is catalyzed by HgCl₂.
