The characterization of cellulose by viscometric methods

I. Slávik

Slovak Academy of Sciences, Bratislava

Abstract: In practice there is sometimes a considerable variation in polymerization showing an inferior quality of cellulose with a lower polymerization degree, with the same viscosity reading measured in concn. of 10 g./l. Cu-NH3 soln. This method was modified by decreasing the concn. to 0.5-1.0 g./l. and expressing the results hy Philipoff's equation: ns = log ηrel/log(1 + [6√ηrel].20), where ηrel shows the relative viscosity at higher and ηrel at lower concn., n8 expresses the polydispersion of the cellulose and, in the case of an equil., the value is below 7.0 but is higher than 8.0 when not in equil.
