Polarographic maximums of the first kind in solutions of mercury salts

Abstract: Two possible causes for the streaming of the electrolyte around the Hg drop electrode were studied. In the first, it was believed that the surface potential difference on the neck and top of the drop should induce the flow of Hg in the direction of increasing potential and thereby impose the dragging effect on the soln. in the environment of the Hg drop. H. believes that the Hg drop does not rotate and that the dragging of the soln. in the environment of the drop is impossible because the soln. does not adhere to the surface of the Hg. In the second, the streaming of the electrolyte is explained by Ilkovǐc's (C.A. 30, 37272) concept of unhomogenous elec. field around the charged drops which absorbs the dipolar mols. in the region of the most unhomogenous field, and which was modified by a screening effect on the elec. field by a glass capillary tube and also supported by a series of expts. with the solns. of Hg salts.
