Abstract: To ascertain that there is a sufficient amt. of coke formed during the thermal distn. of dried sulfate black liquor (I) for the reduction of added Na2SO4 in the production of sulfate cellulose, exptl. distn. of I was carried out. The compn. (%) of I dried at 110° was: ash 38.0, org. matter 62.0, NaOH + Na2CO3 9.8 (as Na2O), Na2SO4 7.98, C 35.97, H 3.96, and S 3.6. At 950°, 33% of the original or 53% of the org. material is volatilized and the distn. residue contains 55% of the original C and 14% of the original H. All organically bound S is volatilized; the remaining S is inorg. In the normal regeneration furnace there is more C than is necessary for reduction of Na2SO4. C is mostly utilized to keep the high temp. in the reduction zone.
