Abstract: cf. C.A. 48, 8574e, 6153b, 11101d. The interrelation of the effect of the intensity of radiation and temp. on the aging of rubber was studied. The upper limit of the effectiveness of light is in an area 4360 A. Increasing temp. accelerates oxidation considerably, but it is retarded by increasing intensity of irradiation. Calcn. analysis shows an exponential relation of the length of the induction period and the intensity of radiation at const. temp. and a linear relation of the height of the reaction curves and temp. with const. radiation. In the aging of natural rubber, there is, at the same time, an oxidative cleavage and branch chaining (vulcanization). Heat accelerates oxidation, and radiation accelerates vulcanization.
