Study of alkali sulfite-lignin. I. Chlorination with hypochlorites

Abstract: There is chlorination as well as oxidation in the reaction between hypochlorites and alkali sulfite-lignin (AS-L) in alk. and neutral medium. By increasing alky. and temp., oxidation is favored and chlorination retarded. By adding 1 mole of NaOCl to 100 g. AS-L in alk. medium, by oxidation, first the side chain of lignin is cleaved, but the MeO groups are unchanged. By addnl. NaOCl and decreasing alky., MeO is split off and soly. of AS-L in slightly acid medium is increased.
