The polymerization of vinyl chloride at atmospheric pressure

Abstract: The polymerization of vinyl chloride at atm. pressure is carried out in aq. soln. with K2S2O8 as the initiator. In this polymerization, low-mol.-wt. compds. are formed which differ in their surface-active and soly. properties. L. and K. point out that this reaction cannot be considered as one which occurs primarily in soln. In view of the following facts (a) the difference in the soly. properties of the compds., (b) the stability of emulsions, (c) the higher concn. of the monomer in the micelles of the emulsifier and in the H2O soln., one can assume that the reaction at the gas-liquid phase probably has the character of a polymerization in an emulsion.
