A cyclic preparation of thiosulfate and formation of polythio acids
F. Hanic
Abstract: To prep. Na2S2O3, a gaseous mixt. of H2S:SO2 (1:0.8) is introduced into a NaOH soln. NaOH decreases the soly. of Na2S2O3 only slightly. By adding NaOH soln. to a satd. soln. of Na2S2O3, and changing the NaOH into Na2S2O3 with the H2S-SO2 mixt., a supersaturated soln. of Na2S2O3 forms, and Na2S2O3 ppts. The concn. of Na2S2O3 can be chosen so that a satd. soln. forms at higher temp. Upon cooling Na2S2O3.5H2O crystallizes. The resulting satd. soln. is used to dissolve more NaOH.
