Abstract:

Sugarcane wax has been used as a source of nutraceutical products by Cuba and other Asian countries. Sugarcane wax is obtained industrially from sugarcane juice filter mud or cachaza, as it is also called, through a solvent extraction process. There are different studies where the use of toluene, hexane, heptane and benzene is recommended as solvents for wax extraction, but none of the previous studies select the solvents used on the basis of an affinity analysis between the solvent and purified sugarcane wax. This paper focuses on the determination of Hansen solubility parameters (HSPs) of refined sugarcane wax using Hansen’s solubility theory in order to recommend more efficient solvents. Both the classic experimental method and Yamamoto Molecule Breaking method (Y-MB) were used to determine them with the help of the HSPiP program and enhanced Microsoft Excel workbook by authors. The HSPs of the given refined sugarcane wax were δD = 17.66 MPa1/2, δP  = 2.78 MPa1/2, δH = 2.02 MPa1/2, being toluene a solvent of greater affinity.
