Determination of Methylmercury in Sediment Samples by AAS

Abstract: In the present study isolation of methylmercury from sediments by steam distillation was investigated. Optimal distillation conditions were found out by distillation of model aqueous samples. The amount of mercury was determined by thermal oxidation-amalgamation technique. Isolation of methylmercury from the samples was approved by an independent method of high-performance liquid chromatography. The recovery of the methylmercury after steam distillation was 97-100 %. The accuracy of the distillation procedure was confirmed by analysis of sediment standard reference material.
