Estimation of the allyl group in starch derivatives

Abstract: For estimation of the allyl groups in allylstarch a method which involves addition of mercury (II) acetate to double bonds and the subsequent acidimetric titration has been applied. The method was verified by the allyl alcohol estimation and the results obtained in the estimation of two allylstarch samples were compared with the values of elemental analyses and with the degree of substitution values calculated from these analyses. There was a good agreement between both approaches. The method is especially suitable for the derivatives with low degree of substitution. The results have been evaluated statistically.
