Acetolysis of (4-O-methylglucurono)xylan

Abstract: A two-step procedure for acetolysis of (4-O-methylglucurono)xylan has been elaborated. In the first step, the polysaccharide treated at subambient temp. with the acetolysis mixt. is acetylated and goes into soln.; the acetolysis takes place during the second stage of the process, carried out at elevated temp. α-Acetates of xylooligosaccharides (degree of polymn. 2-5) as well as higher neutral and uronic acid-contg. oligosaccharides (not identified) have been isolated from the acetolyzate by column chromatog. on silica gel.
