Conversion of technical mixtures of polyhydric phenols into resinous products. III. Condensation of pyrocatechol residues with formaldehyde in alkali

Abstract: Condensations of pyrocatechol residues (I) with HCHO and of I and diphone with HCHO in an alk. medium to give resols are described. The changes in n and in d. were used to follow the reactions. The best ratio of I to HCHO was 1:0.98 mole in the presence of 0.01M NaOH, based on I. The best ratios of I to diphene were 30:70 to 70:30.
