Substituent effects on physical-properties of substituted azobenzenes

Abstract: A series of symmetrical 4,4'-disubstituted azobenzenes has been prepared. Their dipóle moments vary within the range of 1.2 to 8.1 x 10^-30 Cm. The Raman, mass, and ¹³C NMR spectra are reported and discussed. The properties of azobenzenes point out an electron-withdrawing character of the azo bridge. It has been claimed that the nonzero value of the azobenzene dipóle moment results from the hybridization of the ni­trogen atoms, intermediate between the sp² and sp³ state.
