Abstract: The relation between the addition of chlorine in a mixture of cis- and irons-1,3-dichloro-
2-butenes in order to prepare 1,2,3,3-tetraehlorobutane, catalysed by phosphorus
pentachloride on one hand and the amount of catalyst and temperature on the other
hand was studied. Phosphorus pentachloride used by the authors was proven to be
a selective catalyst, significantly preferring addition of chlorine to substitution. The
optimum amount of catalyst was found to be 0.25 ± 0.05 % (w/w) at 22 °C, expressed
as an admixture of red phosphorus by weight of t h e mixture of l,3-dichloro-2-butenes.
Temperature elevation considerably favours the selectivity of addition.
