Abstract: SO2 solns. (2.40 to 4.42%) with 10 g. glucose/l. and 8 g. NaOH/l., or without these addns., were heated up to 150° for 3.5 hrs. in glass test tubes of 2-cm. diam., opened or closed by fusion and in beakers of 11-cm. diam. In narrow tubes, less of SO2 was decompd., and less of H2SO4, thiosulfates, and elementary S was formed than in larger beakers. After cooling in closed tubes, the thiosulfates present remained unchanged, while in the open tubes and beakers they decompd. with the formation of the equiv. amt. of elementary S. A chain reaction during the decompn. of SO2 at higher temp. causes a greater deactivation of free radicals on the walls of narrow than on the walls of large vessels.
