Abstract: The sulfidation of alkali cellulose of heavier consistency (boiled-cereal-like) in NaOH solns. is more favorable at concns. of 11 to 13% NaOH. At lower concns., due to increased soly. of CS2, a great no. of by-products is formed. The formation of xanthates is reduced by the hydrolysis of alkali cellulose. At higher concns. the formation of xanthates is decreased by the sapon. of xanthate groups and the conditions for the formation of by-products are more favorable. At an 11 to 13% NaOH concn. there is a max. swelling of cellulose which can be proved by the effect of temp.
