Preparation, isolation, and identification of 1,2,2-trichlorobutane

Abstract: Chlorination of 1,2-dichlorobutane by elemental chlorine at 110°C in the presence of SbCl₅ as a catalyst resulted in a mixture of trichlorobutanes. These were identified as 1,1,2-trichlorobutane, 1,2,3-trichlorobutane, and 1,2.4-trichlorobutane. Besides these compounds the reaction mixture contained so far not described 1,2,2-trichlorobutane. The structure of the new product was determined by spectral methods.
