Importance of the preliminary curve in the transformation of the blackening into the spectral line intensity

Abstract: It was shown that the preliminary curve, which is a graphical representation of the relation between the blackenings taken in two steps of a suitable light-attenuating device (e.g. step filter) has, in its linear part, the direction tangent equal to one. From the position of the linear part of the preliminary curve the ,,gamma" of the photographic material may be determined. The calculated relations were experimentally verified. With the aid of these results the characteristical blackening curves can be readily established.
