The Effect of Admixtures in Solid Phases and of Geometrical Properties of Particles on Equilibrium of the Reaction L(s) = M(s) + N(g)

Abstract: The thermal decompn. reaction, L(s) = M(s) N(g) was studied theoretically. The effect on the equil. temp., te, and on the gas equil. pressure, pN;e, of impurities and geometrical properties of particles of the 2 cryst. phases were established. As e.g., the obtained formulas were applied to the decompn. of CaCO3 and MgCO3. At sufficiently high temps., simultaneously with the decompn. reaction, or immediately after, sintering and growth of L and M can take place. When these 2 processes are considerably slower with respect to the establishment of the equil. of the decompn. reaction, then the system will pass through a series of metastable equil. states. In this case the values of the fugacities of N depend on the curvatures of both the surface of the individual grains and the surface of the necks formed during sintering.
