Reactivity of alcohols with ethylene oxide

Abstract: The reaction rate of addition of methyl alcohol, ethyl alcohol, w-butyl alcohol, isopropyl alcohol, tert-butyl alcohol and phenol on ethylene oxide was measured. Obtained, results were correlated with the empirical constants σ* for particular hydrocarbon residue on the added hydroxyl substances. The relatively high and positive value of the empirical constant ρ* gives evidence for the importance of the acidic hydrogen, the acidity of which has a decreasing tendency in order from primary to tertiary alcohol.
