Derivatives of ferrocene. XVI. Evidence of formation of ferrocene with an α,α'-dioxopentamethylene, or pentamethylene heteroannular chain bridging

Abstract: 1,1'-(α,α'-Diketopentamethylene)ferrocene was synthetized by two methods (Scheme 1), different from that one used in our preceding paper [3], confirming our conception given in the previous papers [1—3] that the base-catalysed aldole condensation of 1,1'-diacetylferrocene with aldehydes, followed by the intramolecular Michael addition, yields the above mentioned substance. Interpretation of the infra-red spectra of both the 1,1'-(α,α'-diketopentamethylene)ferrocene and its reduction product with the penta- 'methylene chain bridging supports also the conception on the structure of the substances in question.
