2-[p-(Diethylamino)phenylazo]-1,3-indandione as an acid-base indicator

Abstract: The oxime of 2-[p-(diethylamino)phenylazo]- 1,3-indandione (I) was prepd. and the keto- and enol-forms isolated. The change of one tautomeric form into another with change in pH can be followed spectrophotometrically at the isosbestic point at 430 mμ. The color change at pH 4.8 to 6.2 can be used in the titrn. of down to 0.01N strong acid and base. The dissocn. consts. of the oxime of I and of 2-(m-sulfophenylazo)-1,3-indandione were detd. by pH titrns.
