Isothiocyanates. XI. The determination of Hammett's σ constant of the NCS group with absorption frequencies in the infrared

Abstract: cf. CA 58, 8529h, 8533f. On the basis of correlations of IR absorption frequencies of OH and CO groups with Hammett's σ consts. of various substituents, the const., σp, for the group NCS, in phenols (+0.34 ± 0.07), in benzoic acids (+0.48 ± 0.15), and in acetophenones (+0.32 ± 0.13) was detd. The pos. values of σp for the NCS group indicate its electron accepter character.
